The History of Social Media

One of the most powerful tools in the modern world is social media. It has allowed consumers to share their experiences with others, and has provided businesses a way to advertise. In addition, politicians use social media to spread campaign messages to voters.

The first social networking sites were developed in the late 70s. They were called Computerized Hobbyists Bulletin Board Systems (CHBBS). These websites allowed people to network with others on the same computer club.

Another early form of social media was listservs. Listservs are mailing lists, which allow multiple users to send emails. People can add, remove, or update their email address in one place.

Social networks like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter began to pop up around the turn of the century. Some of these sites became popular, while others didn’t. However, most were successful.

Facebook was the site that would eventually become the most well-known and influential of all the social media platforms. It was also the site where the concept of hashtag was born. This simple, yet powerful feature has helped promote many issues, including the Black Lives Matter movement and the #YOLO timesuck.

In 2011, Google launched Google+. Google+ offered a variety of features, such as video hangouts and group chats. At the peak of its popularity, it had over 500 million “identity” users.

Other popular social sites include Tumblr, Instagram, and Pinterest. All three of these sites are available on desktop and mobile devices. Using a social media website is free and gives consumers a platform to express themselves honestly and to spread their opinions.
